About Me
Joseph Locke, LCSW
I am a licensed clinical social worker who has been working in the mental health field with both children and adults since the early 2000’s. I completed my undergraduate training in social work and addictions counseling at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana and my graduate training at the Indiana University School of Social Work in Indianapolis. I have held positions such as: mental health technician, case manager, psychotherapist, team leader, clinical supervisor and assistant director at different mental health centers in Indiana. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and fishing- anything that gets me outdoors, DIY projects in my home or yard, and volunteering at Ryan’s Place.
My Services
I am constantly amazed by the strength and resiliency of my clients despite their challenges. I have met some truly amazing people. Although they did not all feel that way when they first came to see me, I cannot recall a single person who did not leave feeling better for taking the risk and putting in the work required of participating in therapy. And I especially take pride in those who have given therapy a second try (or more) and benefited from having done so.

Individual, Couples & Child Counseling / Psychotherapy
I provide individual and couples counseling for adults. I also work with children and families on a limited basis. I will meet with you in my office or, at times, I might be able to connect with you over a secure, HIPAA compliant video conferencing platform. At this time I have a waiting list, and am only accepting new clients on a private pay basis.
I specialize in working with persons struggling with bereavement, anxiety, depression, substance use, personality disorder, childhood sexual abuse or other psychological trauma, adjustment to major life changes, marital or relationship problems, chronic illness, disability, or caregiving. Whatever brings you to counseling, I value getting to know you as an individual and discovering all the personal strengths, talents, interests, life experiences and social resources that you have (even if they have been long forgotten about), and conspiring with you to use these things to better your situation.
Parent / Guardian Consultation
Parent / guardian consultation is a service for parents or guardians trying to find effective strategies for relating to or helping their child, teen, or other loved one when regular parenting or caregiving techniques are just not working. Parents or guardians can come on their own or with their dependent. They may come for a single consultation, a series of consultations, or on an ‘as needed’ basis. After an initial face to face consultation in my office, or by video conference, we can have further consultations by your preferred mode of communication- phone, video conference, or at my office.
Life or Career Coaching
Life or career coaching are services for individuals, or small groups, who are not experiencing psychological distress, but who want to work with a helping professional to make improvements in different areas of their lives- whether it be personal, spiritual, at work, or in business. These services can take place at the office, home, or community, and/ or over the phone, by email, text message, or video conference.
Clinical Supervision / Case Consultation
I enjoy working with other helping professionals- collaborating with them, assisting and supporting them through life struggles, and assisting and supporting them grow professionally and in their careers. In addition to counseling or coaching other helping professionals, I provide individual and group clinical supervision, and case consultation for clinicians working towards independent licensure. I also provide these services for pastors, independent practitioners, or other helping professionals seeking a second opinion, accountability, support, or who just want to continue to learn and grow as helping professionals.
Organization Consultation / Critical Incident Response
I provide consultation to organization leaders seeking insight into how the “soft skills” of the counseling field can help them, their colleagues, their congregants, their subordinates, or their organization-as-a-whole. These skills can be used improve relationships, morale, organizational culture and functioning, or productivity. I can also facilitate critical incident debriefing onsite at your organization, or I can help establish temporary or ongoing support groups for bereavement, suicide, chronic illness, or other issues causing distress for persons at work, home, or in your congregation.

FAQ
A few of the most frequently asked questions
This is not a comprehensive list, so please contact me with any other questions you might have.
Is counseling / psychotherapy / talk therapy effective?
Yes, psychotherapy has strong supporting evidence of its effectiveness over no treatment, and has outcomes similar or better than medication for psychological problems, with fewer side effects, longer lasting effects, and at times with continuing improvements occurring long after the treatment has been discontinued. Some people benefit from psychotherapy or medication alone, while others benefit from a combination of psychotherapy and medication.
Does going to counseling / therapy mean there is something wrong with me?
No, one in five adults in the US struggle with their mental health to the degree that they meet the criteria for one or more mental health disorders. Many more will suffer from a mental health condition or substance use disorder over the course of their life time. And, in fact, no one is left untouched from the problems and suffering in life for which therapy can help. To bring this point home, just consider this partial list of the things that might be addressed in therapy: the emotional and behavioral problems that some children experience, the impact this has on their parents and those around them, marital or relational problems others of us will experience, stress related to occupational, social, economic or physical health problems, the anguish of witnessing our loved ones suffer, difficult life decisions or transitions, and the inescapable reality that despite all the good and bad of life, we and our loved ones will all still eventually die. So, as the saying goes: “We are all in this boat together, and we are all sea sick.”
How long and how often do people go to counseling / psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy can be as short as a few sessions and as long as a few years. Sessions can occur as often as a few times per week (though this is very rare), and as far apart as once per month (though this is not ideal). It all really depends on how much you need to work on, how much time and energy you are willing and able to dedicate to your healing and recovery; and, finally, the degree of recovery and healing you wish to achieve. Insurance will only cover therapy that is “medically necessary”, meaning your symptoms (eg, anxiety or depression) meet the criteria for a mental health disorder. However, some people enter into or continue in therapy for reasons not covered by insurance (eg, some insurance plans do not cover marital therapy), or for self-improvement beyond what an insurance company might say is “medically necessary”. The majority of the persons I have worked with over the years have participated in therapy for approximately 12 to 18 months, but certainly there have been many who have benefited from much shorter or longer courses of therapy. The persons I have worked with have typically met with me every week or every other week. And, typically, we space our sessions out further and further apart was we approach the end of the therapy, but your preference and both of our schedules also impact how frequently we will meet.
Do you practice CBT, DBT or another specific form of counseling or psychotherapy?
I have been trained in a number of different treatment modalities- including many of the newest evidence-based practices, such as those noted above. If you want a specific form of therapy, I will do my best to provide this to you or refer you to someone who can. My general approach is to listen and collaborate with you to get an idea of what you are looking for in therapy, and then select or adapt an approach that is a best fit based on what we have discussed. I will touch base with you often about how therapy is going and inquire about what is working and what is not. Besides checking with you, I keep a close eye on how things are going myself. I will integrate or switch to different approaches as circumstances necessitate. The key thing is that what we are doing is benefiting you and moving us closer to your goals.
